Are your hardwood floors looking tired, scratched, or dull? You’re not alone—every hardwood floor eventually loses some of its shine. The good news is that you don’t have to replace your floors to bring back their beauty. Hardwood refinishing is one of the best ways to restore elegance, improve durability, and give your home a fresh new look—without the cost of starting from scratch.
At Capell Flooring & Interiors, we refinish hardwood floors in Boise, Meridian, and the Treasure Valley every week, and we’ve been helping families love their hardwood since 1974.
Hardwood refinishing is a process where we sand down your existing hardwood floors, remove years of scratches, wear, and fading, and then apply new stain and protective finish. The result: a floor that looks brand new.
After sanding, most floors appear lighter because the natural patina (caused by years of oxidation and sunlight) is removed. This fresh start allows you to either restore your floor to its original tone—or completely change the look with a custom stain.
We’ve fine-tuned our refinishing system to be efficient, clean, and hassle-free:
1. Dust-Minimized Sanding – Our advanced sanding equipment connects to high-powered vacuums, which greatly reduces airborne dust. While no process is completely dust-free, our “Less Dust” system keeps your home cleaner and makes refinishing far more comfortable.
2. Staining (Optional) – Want a new color? We offer custom staining with premium Duraseal products. White Oak, Red Oak, and Hickory take stain beautifully, while Maple and Birch require a special “water-popping” technique to achieve an even, professional look.
3. Protective Finishing – We apply 2–3 coats of protective finish for durability and sheen. Matte or Satin finishes are our top recommendations, as they look elegant and hide everyday imperfections better than High Gloss.
One of the questions we hear most often is: “How do I know when it’s time to refinish my floors?”
There’s actually a simple water test you can try at home:
* Pour a few drops of water on your hardwood.
* If the finish is in good shape, the water will bead up on top of the surface.
* If the finish is worn out, the water will absorb quickly into the wood, leaving a dark spot that can’t be wiped away.
This is a quick and easy way to check if your floors are ready for refinishing.
Other common signs include:
* Visible scratches, dents, or dings that bother you.
* Dull, faded areas—especially in front of slider doors or big windows where sunlight hits daily.
* Uneven sheen or discoloration from years of use.
General rule of thumb: most solid hardwood floors need refinishing every 8–12 years. A typical ¾” solid wood floor can usually be refinished 4–6 times in its lifetime, giving you decades of beauty if properly maintained.

Hardwood refinishing is often a smarter choice than replacement:
Cost-Effective – Save money by renewing your existing floors instead of installing new ones.
Eco-Friendly – Refinishing extends the life of your wood, reducing waste.
Customizable – Change your floor’s color to match today’s design trends.
Long-Lasting – A professionally refinished floor can last 7–10 years with proper care.
Need to extend your hardwood into another room? Our team specializes in hardwood additions. We carefully “lace” new planks into your existing floor, sand, and refinish everything together for a seamless, uniform look.
If you have pets, refinishing your hardwood floors can help extend their life and keep them looking good—but it’s important to be realistic. All wood will scratch eventually, no matter how hard the species or how durable the finish. What refinishing does is give your floors a refreshed surface with added protection, making them more resistant to everyday wear.
We often recommend a matte or satin finish for pet owners, because it helps hide light scratches and paw prints better than a glossy sheen. Anything glossy will show scratches and imperfections much easier. Pairing refinished floors with rugs or runners in high-traffic areas also helps minimize wear while keeping your home beautiful and pet-friendly.
Not every floor needs full refinishing. If your hardwood has only minor surface wear, a maintenance coat can refresh the finish without sanding to bare wood. It is also less expensive than a full refinishing.
A good rule of thumb: if you had your floors refinished 1–2 years ago, that’s often the perfect time to schedule a maintenance coat to help maintain your floor’s longevity.
For deeper scratches, discoloration, or uneven tones, a full refinishing is the better option. Our flooring technicians can determine this onsite at your home and recommend which option makes the most sense for your hardwood floor.
1. How often should hardwood floors be refinished?
Most floors need refinishing every 7–10 years, depending on traffic and care. Solid hardwood typically lasts 4–6 refinishes over its lifetime.
2. Can all hardwood floors be refinished?
Solid hardwood can almost always be refinished multiple times. Engineered hardwood depends on the veneer thickness—our team will check this during your consultation.
3. Will refinishing add value to my home?
Yes! Fresh hardwood floors are a strong selling point in real estate.
4. How long does refinishing take?
Most projects take 3–5 days, depending on square footage, stain choices, and drying time.
5. Will there be dust everywhere?
Our “Less Dust” sanding system minimizes airborne dust, though no construction process is 100% dust-free. We take care to keep your home clean.
6. Do I have to move all my furniture?
Yes, floors must be cleared before refinishing, but we can help recommend local moving services if needed.
Hardwood refinishing is one of the best investments you can make in your home. It restores your floor’s natural beauty, gives you the chance to customize its color and finish, and extends its life for years to come.
