Does Hardwood Floor Refinishing Smell? Should You Leave the House?

You love your hardwood floors.

You may just not love what years of traffic, scratches, pets, spills and everyday life have done to them.

Fortunately, one of the great advantages of many solid hardwood floors is that they can be sanded and refinished instead of completely replaced.

But before homeowners get excited about seeing those worn floors looking fresh again, we regularly hear two very practical questions:

“Does hardwood floor refinishing smell?”

And…

“Can I stay in my house while you’re doing it?”

The straightforward answer?

Yes, hardwood refinishing has a smell—and you should plan ahead for it.

At Capell Flooring and Interiors, we would rather explain this before your project begins than surprise you afterward.

Why Does Hardwood Refinishing Smell?

Refinishing an existing hardwood floor typically involves sanding away the worn surface and applying new stain and/or finish to protect and refresh the wood.

Those hardwood stains and finishes can have a noticeable odor.

Some homeowners aren't particularly bothered by it.

Others walk into the house and immediately say, “Nope. I'm staying somewhere else.”

Neither reaction is unusual.

Our experience is that people simply have very different sensitivities to smells. Your neighbor may barely notice something that bothers you quite a bit.

Our current hardwood flooring FAQ tells customers that the odor diminishes over time and that many people find it much less noticeable within roughly 1–3 days, although everyone responds differently.

That's an important distinction:

There isn't one magic number of hours that works for every homeowner.

Should You Stay in the House During Hardwood Refinishing?

Our recommendation is to plan on being out of the home while the hardwood finish is being applied.

If a large portion of your home's flooring is being refinished, trying to live around the project can also become inconvenient very quickly.

Instead, this may be the perfect time to schedule:

A weekend getaway
A few nights at a hotel
A visit with family
A trip you've already been planning

Think of it as building the inconvenience into the project instead of letting the inconvenience surprise you.

A little planning beforehand can make the entire refinishing experience much easier.

What About the Smell After the Work Is Finished?

This is where individual sensitivity really matters.

For many people, the smell becomes much less noticeable as the finish dries and the home is ventilated.

For someone particularly sensitive to odors, it may take longer before the house feels comfortable again.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also recommends increased ventilation during remodeling activities involving products that may release volatile organic compounds, including paints and varnishes. EPA remodeling guidance recommends continuing strong ventilation following activities involving finishes and other materials that may off-gas.

Don't judge your schedule solely by whether the floor “looks dry.”

Talk with us about your specific project, the finishing process being used and when it makes sense for you and your family to return.

Don't Forget About Pets

This is one people sometimes overlook.

Plan for your pets to be somewhere else during the finishing portion of the project too.

Dogs and cats obviously shouldn't be walking across freshly finished floors, but the concern isn't only paw prints.

Our hardwood refinishing guidance recommends moving pets—including dogs, cats, fish and other animals—away from the home while the finish is being applied.  If you have any plants that are sensitive they might need to be out of the home temporarily too.

So when you're arranging where you will stay, make sure Fido and Fluffy are included in the plan.

Is Hardwood Refinishing Worth the Temporary Hassle?

For the right hardwood floor?

Absolutely—and that's the other side of this conversation.

You're temporarily rearranging your life because you're preserving and renewing something that may already be one of the most beautiful features of your home.

Instead of living indefinitely with worn, scratched or tired-looking hardwood, refinishing can reveal the character of that wood again.

And that is one of the reasons homeowners continue choosing real hardwood.

Your floor has a history.

Refinishing gives it another chapter.

Capell Flooring's current FAQ notes that solid ¾-inch hardwood can often be refinished multiple times over its life, although the actual number depends on the individual floor and its condition.

A Simple Hardwood Refinishing Planning Checklist

If you're considering refinishing your hardwood floors in Boise, Meridian or the surrounding Treasure Valley, start with these questions:

Before the project:

1. Where will we stay while the finish is being applied?
2. Where will our pets stay?
3. Is anyone in the household unusually sensitive to odors?
4. How long should we plan to remain away from this particular project?
5. What needs to be moved or prepared before refinishing begins?
6. When can we safely resume normal use of the floor?

Those conversations are much easier to have before the project begins.

Thinking About Refinishing Your Hardwood Floors?

If your hardwood floors have seen better days, don't automatically assume they need to be torn out and replaced.

They may simply need another chance to look great.
